New comment on "How do you explain cloud computing to your colleagues?"

LinkedIn Groups

Is everyone so blinded by a marketing ploy? Cloud means network period. Private cloud is LAN, Public cloud is WAN. You have been using cloud services since the day you opened a hotmail, yahoo, gmail, etc. account. You have used cloud computing whenever you use a network share, sent a request for information from a database, or had a website hosted for you. The term came from visio diagrams where you represented the internet/WAN visually as a cloud. It is a new term to take the fear of the perception that the internet is dangerous/insecure from executives. So instead of sayin your data, applications, etc. is hosted on the internet you say it is the cloud. I expect the general public to fall for this ploy but not IT professionals. Cloud also has tried to incorporate Software as a service, infrastructure as a service, Storage as a service, etc. So don't respond defending the term as something new, it is just a reinvention for marketing that has been highly successful using the buzz word "cloud". Soon we will be marketed to a new word that tests well in focus groups.
