New comment on "How do you explain cloud computing to your colleagues?"

LinkedIn Groups

Generally I explain the OSSM acronym, (On-Demand - When you want it, Scalable - As big or small as you want it when you want it, Self Service, Measurable - Know how much you are using).

In terms of a simple analogy personally I really like the utiliy model analogy for consuming public cloud services. However I read a great alternative using a bus company as an example for justifiying building a private cloud as well as giving an example of consuming cloud services.

The bus example goes something like this:

Imagine you startup a bus company and you analyze all the routes you want to provide bus services for. You determine that across all your routes you need 10 x 20 seater busses, 8 x 50 seater busses, 2 80 seater busses etc etc.

Then the demand changes across a number of your routes, you now have some busses that are almost empty and some busses that are overcrowded. To fix this problem you have a dilema of whether to buy bigger busses/sell smaller ones etc or try and swap busses around to meet the variable demands of all the routes. This is traditional IT.

Now imagine that you could buy busses that could all start small and automatically grow and shrink as people got on and off the bus, this is cloud computing.
