New comment on "How do you explain cloud computing to your colleagues?"

LinkedIn Groups

I like to use the utility example in that you shouldn't care if your electricity comes from coal, hydro, solar, nuclear, you turn on the switch and you have power. Best of all you only pay for what you use. After six years I still talk about Building Blocks, Attached and Finished services. Finished services are applications that you can purchase today run on prem that are now provided for you safely, securely and highly available. Like Exchange for email, calendar and tasks, SharePoint for content management, people and content search, collaboration, and much much more, Lync for real-time, ad-hoc communication and web conferencing. Attached services are services you can "attach" to an on-prem application, for example, keep your Exchange on-prem but hygiene or filter or archive your email off prem--services such as FOPE (Forefront Online Protection for Exchange) or EOA (Exchange Online Archive) deliver a hybrid model. This is a great means for customers to test the waters before diving into hosted Finished services. Building blocks are PaaS offerings like Amazon and Azure which provide a platform to build custom highly available, secure, hosted applications.
