New comment on "How do you explain cloud computing to your colleagues?"

LinkedIn Groups

There are some good suggestions above. For non-techies, I liken cloud services to that of a rental car (already mentioned above), a secure hotel room (for the non-public clouds), or an apartment. Essentially, cloud technology isn't new...the foundations that have created it have been around for quite some time. What is new though is the client's ability to leverage resources as they need it, via a portal, with aggressive contract and pricing terms. Cloud can (stress "can" as it's not a fit for everything or everyone) essentially remove the burden and costly aspects of an enterprise supporting their own servers and data centers, and deliver similar performance and transparency, with the economics of a utility. In other words, it's there when you need it and when you no longer need it, turn it off just like a light switch. It final words, it provides for optimal agility in terms of expanding and contracting of needed server resources.
