New comment on "How do you explain cloud computing to your colleagues?"

LinkedIn Groups

I generally use electricity as an analogy. Sure, there are times where having an electrician on staff (or even several) makes sense. But not for most businesses, certainly not at most sites.

IT services are continuing to become "commoditiezed" and small to medium business will not generally need a WAN/SAN/Hypervisor/Directory Services person - the people who are doing these jobs now will either need to take on a broader role, support a wider customer base or move up the stack where the business will see their value.

Cloud services are nothing new, the main thing that's changing is the pipes are larger, more reliable and the framework to take advantage of them is much more robust. From a technical point of view there is little difference in accessing your data via a T3 or a front end bus, really it's a matter of taking latency into account.

A DBA is not something that makes sense to a CFO. The guy who translates KPI's into a dashboard is.
