New comment on "How do you explain cloud computing to your colleagues?"

LinkedIn Groups

Many suggestions are already there. Here is one more:

Compare cloud computiong with electricity. We buy electricity, it is metered in our premises, used for multiple appliances and helps run home and offices. We do not have captive power plants in our offices or at homes, we do not produce electricity ourselves. There are power generation companies. There are power distribution companies. And there is massive standardization of production, distribution, exchanging and pricing mechanisms of electricity.

Same way we are begining to enter into an IT era where-in end state in a decade or two would be similar to electricity. There would be computing gear and application generating companies (Like IBM, HP, Google and Salesforce), and there would be computing and application distribution companies ( like Amazon, Apple appstores) etc. We as IT and business users have to identify the right business functions for which external utilies are available outside. We need to select and buy them carefully due to lack of standardization. We will have pains of integrating them ourselves in short and medium run. But in long run all of this would be very simple much same like electricity.

Hope this helps.
