New comment on "How do you explain cloud computing to your colleagues?"

LinkedIn Groups

Defining the Cloud:
The definition of cloud is evolving and changing rapidly.. That said I explain what cloud is by communicating the common features or aspects of a cloud “utility based” computing model to my colleagues, and customers.. This explanation has resonated well with both groups:

On-demand/self-service
• End user directly interface
• Minimal admin resources required

Network access
• Available over the network
• Via thin or thick client platforms (e.g., mobile phones, laptops, and PDAs).

Resource pooling
• Infrastructure services are consolidated to provide a seemingly endless supply of computing resources.
• Example: Storage, processing, memory, network bandwidth, and virtual machines.

Rapid elasticity
• Provisioning of cloud services should be nearly instantaneous. I
• 240 times faster than more convention methods.

Measured service
• Metering capability at some level of abstraction appropriate to the type of service (e.g., storage, processing, bandwidth, and active user accounts).
• Resource usage can be monitored, controlled, and reported.

Hope this helps...
