New comment on "How do you explain cloud computing to your colleagues?"

LinkedIn Groups

I guess I was unclear. I use remote desktop myself all the time both to a discrete desktop and to hypervisored VMs, but I am trying to imagine an enterprise with perhaps thousands of people doing this at once thru the internet connection.

It might cause some people's "Game of Thrones" playbacks to stutter, I would think.

I can see the attraction of just getting Acer 3700 nettops for everyone's desk and have the 'real' desktop be virtualized at a central location.

When I think of the cloud I see secure offsite deduplicated compressed backup images.

And guys with internet schemes being able to scale out their websites on a pay-as-you-grow basis.

@Jan

so are you doing your VDI to the cloud? Or to your own Wan? And how about your customers?

Are we just calling the WAN a 'Cloud' so we can sell it faster? Or are you talking about subscription-based services with a vendor providing the service?

Enquiring minds want to know.
