First, to get the conversation rolling, we say "Basically, 'the Cloud' means your stuff is on someone else's machines. Security matters no matter where your stuff is stored, and outsourcing to someone who knows a lot more about security than you do, is often a big win." Sometimes that still doesn't help the lights come on, but when it does, we move to the next phase. Sometimes we try the tax-preparation metaphor: "Do you do your own taxes? Most of us don't since it's a huge distraction from focusing on the value we can add. You farm out those headaches to a professional whose main strength is navigating the rules and regulations, and you get back to working on your core strengths." Eventually we arrive at the electricity metaphor: "Do you run a generator to power the electricity in your house? Most of us don't. If you do have a generator, it's for backup, just in case (always a good idea). But you farm out the primary generator hassle to your utility company -- they handle the decisions of whether to use wind power, hydro, coal, nuclear, solar or geothermal. They handle the maintenance, infrastructure, upgrades, replacements. Makes your time more effective since you're able to focus on USING the service they provide, to the benefit of your own core strengths. When you turn a switch on you're using more so your bill will GO UP, and when you turn a switch off you're using less so your bill will GO DOWN... now, imagine that model applied to computing power -- that's the type of thing you can do with Cloud computing." http://bit.ly/zzEQI7 Posted by Will Trillich |
