New comment on "How do you explain cloud computing to your colleagues?"

LinkedIn Groups

@Jay - I think I've tried to make your point a few times. PRIVATE Cloud is a whole different animal than PUBLIC Cloud. Setting up vCloud Director has so little in common with backing up a few files over the Internet, that describing one does little to give any indication of what the other entails. While. yes, virtualization is an enabling technology, virtualization <> Cloud. I would guess you are deploying your Cloud inside a corporate firewall (at least that's where I see most instances of vCloud ending up.) As you state, Cloud is dependent on many precedent technologies, but scratch more than a bit deep, and you'll see Salesforce.com (a prime example of SaaS) does not use virtualization, at least not in the Hypervisor sense, and more than a few, if not the majority of Private clouds run over leased lines or stay within the boundaries of Internal Ethernet switch pools never EVER traversing the PUBLIC Internet.

The point I have been trying to make over these past few months is (as you state) this is hard to do, and as such, may not be easy to understand. Maybe there IS no easy way to adequately define Cloud computing to non-technical colleagues. I am now convinced that there are DOZENS of INADEQUATE ways to do so <g>....
