The simplest way to explain Cloud Computing to someone not so adept at Technology is to equate it to a utility service we use on a daily basis i.e. electricity. There are two primary traits of electricity: (1) You pay for what you use (2) You have abundant energy available to you and so you dont care whether you wish to run an appliance consuming 1000W or 10W. Similarly, when you use Cloud Computing services, you only pay for the extent of use (data, app services, etc) which may be user count based or time based. Eg.: Pay only for 4 hours of data processing usage. Secondly, you have abundant processing power available to you i.e. it doesn't matter whether you need the processing power of 250 high performance servers (as in the case of sequencing for drug companies) or the power of just 1 server (handing daily business processes of a SME). The advantage of this trait is that you never need to lose out on opportunities simply because you don't have the required computational infrastructure deployed at your base. Hope this makes sense! | |||||
