New comment on "How do you explain cloud computing to your colleagues?"

LinkedIn Groups

@JAN
The reference to 37 different "clouds" is something i've heard in various trade conferences I've attended, I've not actually counted them but it seems that there are as many different "cloud" solutions as there are vendors.
All cloud solutions are provided over the internet/intranet no doubt about that!
And lets me give you an example as to interoperability, imagine this senario.
You are a company that places an application into the cloud, it matters not what it is or where you put it, some time later you get hacked off with your current supplier and you want to move it to another supplier, do you think this will be easy? I think not.
Going into the cloud is a lot more complicated that it seems, its ok for start ups but for established companies with a traditional infrastructure, which is an asset, its not going to be easy to convince me that the cloud is the place to be, despite what cloud suppliers say, no one like's to lose control.
The race to the bottom comment is how cheap "cloud services are, buy a server for a month for $10, soon it will be $9 per month, then $8 and so on and so on, however what do I get for my $10 or $9 or £8? do I get security? doubtful, do I get come back when services fail, very very unlikely, and even if I do its going to be limited to my monthly fee for 3 months, do I get full migration and immigration services to move my "service" back in house or to another provider, you tell me!
the cloud is still very very immature and it the proponents of the "cloud" need to think a little deeper about the "service" they are providing, not everyone works on price and at present it is a price led service model very dangerous imho.
