- From the nature of your question, I believe you are asking about cloud management software that can be used to build a cloud. But you don't mention whether you are thinking about software to build out a service provider or an internal private cloud. Requirements would be quite different.
- One of the biggest differences among the cloud software offerings in comparison to VMware is that as you'd expect VMW only supports their own hypervisor. There's a rapidly growing trend among large enterprises to adopt more than one hpyervisor if for no other reason than to provide some negotiation leverage with VMW and avoid complete lockin. Nearly all of the cloud management platforms that are not VMware support multiple hypervisors.
- Another important difference you'll find is the orientation of the solution vis-a-vis existing enterprise infrastructures vs greenfield deployments. For example, OpenStack (open source cloud management) looks a lot like Amazon with it's focus on blob storage vs SAN/NAS provisioning.
