It's a place where you put yours server and/or applications. And when, you need, or expect, or see your application is becoming slower, you can upgrade the server.

Cloud Computing is extremely important and professionals should have a clear understanding of what it is and how it works. Here is a great free whitepaper on the Top 7 Things Every Executive Should Know About Cloud Computing: http://t.co/p50sCCAv

I like Becky's analogy of not needing to start a bakery to make a sandwich! Another "oversimplification is the comparison to the power company: you pay for access to the power grid and you pay for consumption of power by the kilowatt. In the Server world, that equates to your base package plus the exact requirements for O/S, Disk, RAM, etc.

@Jesus ok but that description only covers a small part of what cloud is, i.e. the model under which you buy/sell it.

Interesting to read the above descriptions, however they fail to explain what the single term is about. I always use this in my Presentations:

Since I start my cloud engagements with business decision makers, I tend to stay away from the techie speak. I simply focus on the end "Business Result". I feel businesses are looking for an answer to their problem. Cloud is just the mechanism to get to their answer. It is not the answer in itself.

Computing uses equipment which provide resources; storage for information, processing power to work on it and connectivity between various bits of infrastructure. Cloud computing is the practice of providing resources that users can take, use and put back any combination of those resources based on their needs. This is in contrast to non-cloud environments that might require a lot of specialist effort to set up and tear down, and may be only offered in fixed combinations.

The below is a YouTube Link that simplifies the cloud message as it pertains to the Contact Center --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qLLpq8NR2M . I think it is extremely well done, while it clearly has an inContact bias, the message is applicable to the overall cloud discussion.

I would say maybe like renting a storage unit. You pay per month or per year to have some else store your "stuff" for you. Important thing to remember is economies of scale. Someone else who specializes in storing stuff can do it a lot cheaper than you can yourself. I.E. if you want a sandwich it wouldn't make much sense to start your own bakery , butcher shop, etc. to put all the ingredients for your one little sandwich.

i describe Cloud Computing to my friends as You can store any of your document, Application, software or what ever you want on server and use it when you want through your or other person system.only you need a connection with that server.

I like #4 of Gary's quote of Yankee Group definition. I think #1-3 are benefits, rather than descriptors. The Cloud is the mainframe via the internet.

Thomas, don't want to run down a rathole here. I suggest you do a little research and Google NIST Cloud definition. NIST is the acronym for National Institute of Standards and Technology. Definitely NOT an amazon thing. I thought this discussion was about how do we explain what "cloud" is in simple terms that everyone can easily comprehend. I am merely sharing how I go about explaining the required attributes. In some conversations I actually just use pictures to illustrate what "on demand" and "self-service" means.. The last part of your comment regarding more acronyms are the things we are able to provide once we do have a cloud in place,(Iaas -Infrastructure -as-a service,PaaS-Platform-as-a-service, and last SaaS-Software-as-a-service.)

I frequently am asked to speak to organizations about security and virtualization and where they connect. In order to set a baseline I typically ask the question " If you have a virtualized data center, do you have a cloud?" Suprisingly enough the response I get is YES. To that I then go on to educate my audience in what is the generally accepted definition of cloud and that is the NIST definition. Simple 5 things to consider

Nice metaphor, however... usually when you stay in hotels, you have your own place somewhere else, in which your funds dwell in the bricks, or at least a rented apartment. Still staying in hotelrooms every now and then still ads up to more than if you just stayed home. Not that many people live in hotelrooms only, and even if the cost of that would match a rental apartment or realestate monthly cost - when they fix that bathroom, its always in the most flashy common style that makes little people feel tall or the light makes it seem like the blue tiles on the wall are transparent like if they were windows... but they are not, and you dont need to feel tall, or or or...
